HONOLULU – It was 'Home Sweet Home' for the Chaminade University women's volleyball team.
Playing in the friendly confines of McCabe Gymnasium for the first time in 26 days, the homecoming was a welcome sight after a rough stretch where their first six Pacific West Conference matches were on the road, posting a 2-4 stretch including four matches in Southern California.
The return was much welcome – and needed – for the Silverswords, who opened a five-match home stand Thursday with an 18-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-19 win over Jessup University.
Tabby Allen (Leander, Texas/Rouse) put down a match-high 15 kills and added three blocks to help the 'Swords improve to 9-8 overall and 3-4 in the PacWest. They have also not lost in five home matches this season.
Lillie Hinton (Spicewood, Texas/Lake Travis) posted 14 kills and a pair of blocks while setters
Lilinoe Paschoal (Paukukalo, Maui, Hawai'i/Baldwin) and
Shannon Sheehy (Phoenix, Ariz./University of San Francisco/Sandra Day O'Connor HS) spread the wealth with three more Silverswords putting down at least five more kills. The duo setters combined for 46 assists on the evening.
Reina Krueger (Fort Collins, Colo./Liberty Commons) put down six kills with five each from
Allison Panter (Denver, Colo./Portland State University/Denver School of Science and Technology HS) and
Beele Wieczorek (Wiesbaden, Germany/Elly-Heuss School), the latter making just her second appearance of the season after recovering from an injury. Krueger also recorded six total blocks while
Anicka Panchartek (Liberec, Czech Republic/Southeastern Louisiana University/SOSPO HS) tied her season-high with four.
Paschoal also had 13 digs while
Kyra Pagud (Honolulu/Moanalua) scooped up 15. Paschoal, Sheehy and Krueger all had three service aces, which was also a career-high for the latter.
Jenna Craft had a team-high 13 kills for the Warriors (3-12, 1-6 PacWest), who put up a spirited effort despite having just nine players available.
The 'Swords stumbled out of the gate in their first home match since Sept. 5, hitting just .154 in the opening set while Jessup hit .375.
CUH finally got the gears rolling in the second set as the block played a factor with four while Allen put down five kills in the frame.
Chaminade then stepped on the throttle with nine aces and six team blocks in the final two sets. They held the Warriors to a minus-.091 attack percentage in the third set but still had to battle with an 18-17 lead.
Cheyenne Canche (San Antonio, Texas/Harlan) then made seven straight trips to the service line to help give the 'Swords take the pivotal set.
Nursing a 15-13 lead in Set 4, Krueger's kill helped Chaminade score five of the next seven points to help them pull away.
The 'Swords totaled 54 kills, 50 assists, 55 digs, 10 aces and a season-high-tying 11 blocks while hitting .224.
Jessup hit .165 with 42 kills, 41 assists, 60 digs, three aces and five blocks.
The Silverswords return to McCabe Gym to face Dominican University of California on Sunday at 3 p.m.
