Men’s Soccer Gains Draw in Road Finale

HILO, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's soccer team completed their road schedule Saturday against the University of Hawai'i Hilo through cloudy and sometimes rainy conditions at Vulcans Soccer Field.

The Silverswords ended their run of eight straight road games – including their first five Pacific West Conference contests – with a 0-0 tie against the Vulcans. Although it was the 45th meeting between the two programs, it is only the second scoreless game in series history, the other coming in September 2011.

The draw snapped a streak of 11 straight defeats for the 'Swords, dating back to the 2025 season finale, although they survived a series of Vulcan attacks in the final minutes including missed penalty kick with over a minute left on the clock.

Chaminade is 0-10-1 and 0-5-1 in the Pacific West Conference while UH Hilo is 4-5-2 and 1-2-2.

Michael Oelberger (Los Angeles/Butler University/Cathedral HS) took two of Chaminade's three shots on the afternoon while Chance Therrien (Charlotte, Vt./University of St. Thomas/Champlain Valley Union HS) took the other which was their only shot that was on target.

Jonah Valmonte (Poolesville, Md./Robert Morris University/Poolesville HS) made four saves to earn his first clean sheet of the season and second career shutout.

The game's most dramatic moment came in the 89th minute when a foul was assessed against the 'Swords in their own penalty area, giving the Vulcans an opportunity to take the lead. However, the ensuing penalty kick sailed over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.

An offsides call against UH Hilo in CUH's 18-yard box followed by a Vulcans' set-piece kick that went out of bounds ensured the 'Swords' first conference and PacWest Challenge point. The draw also snapped a seven-game losing streak against Hilo.

Diego Bastias had one save while the Vulcans took eight shots in all.

With all road games in the book, the Silverswords will finish the season with four straight games at their home pitch at Saint Louis Field, albeit a short turnaround time with a Monday date against Westmont College which is also their first home game since Sept. 6. Kickoff against the Warriors is 12:30 p.m.
