HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's soccer team on Wednesday came out on the short end of a 4-1 decision to Dominican University of California at Saint Louis Field.
Oliver Horgan (Reno, Nev./Cal Poly Humboldt/Galena HS) found the back of the net for the second time this season for the Silverswords' lone score.
The 'Swords fell to 0-12-1 and 0-7-1 in the Pacific West Conference while the Penguins improved to 5-4-4 and 4-1-1 in the conference.
Horgan's goal, the third of his career, was a thing of beauty. After a Dominican defender attempted to return a Chaminade shot towards its own 18-yard box in the 83rd minute, Horgan gained possession of the ball, eluded a pair of Penguins and fired a left-footed shot from 25 yards out that just snuck under the crossbar.
The shot was one of nine attempted by the senior, tying the program record set on Oct. 14, 2013 by Sam Galloway, which also came against Dominican. Five of them were on-goal, one shy of the mark set by Galloway in the same game.
Chara Iniestra (Escondido, Calif./MiraCosta College/San Pasqual HS) took two shots for CUH with single shots coming off the feet of
Caleb Texeira (Pukalani, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui),
Chance Therrien (Charlotte, Vt./University of St. Thomas/Champlain Valley Union HS) and
Vlad Tomutiu (Belmont, Calif./Cañada College/Carlmont HS) as Chaminade actually outshot Dominican by a 14-to-13 count.
Jonah Valmonte (Poolesville, Md./Robert Morris University/Poolesville HS) recorded four saves for the home team while his DUC counterpart Colin Nestor also had four stops.
The Silverswords will have their penultimate game on Saturday when they face Jessup University at the Saint Louis Field pitch. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
