Women’s Tennis Faces Dominican in Home Opener

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's tennis team got their first 2026 action on their home court of the Donald Andrews Diamond Head Tennis Center on Sunday, facing off against Dominican University of California.

Despite the 7-0 defeat, the Silverswords showed plenty of fight, taking numerous games throughout the match.

In doubles action, Kirra Carvalho (Lihue, Kaua'i, Hawai'i/Kaua'i) and Hannah Lewis (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) at No. 2 and the duo of Selena Buttery (Brockway, Pa./Brockway) and Danica Palmer (Philadelphia/Upper Merion Area) at No. 3 dropped their matches by identical 6-1 results.

The 'Swords' top team of Berylin Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) and Isabella Minaudo (Honolulu/Hawai'i Technology Academy) had their match left unfinished, trailing 5-2, after the Penguins clinched the doubles point.

Minaudo had a thrilling finish in her No. 3 singles matchup against Ana Rios. After falling in her first set, 6-3, the sophomore was tied at 5 in the second before Rios pulled away for the 7-5 winner.

Lau also had a competitive match against Maria Garilov in the top spot in the 6-2, 6-3 defeat.

Buttery also had a competitive match at the fifth spot. Less than 24 hours removed from her 15-rebound game for the women's basketball team against Jessup University, the senior fell in a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Maya Cooper.

Lewis dropped her No. 2 singles match, 6-1, 6-1 while Palmer had a 6-0, 6-1 score at No. 6 and Carvalho a 6-0, 6-0 score in the fourth spot.

The Silverswords are back at the Diamond Head Tennis Center on Monday to face the University of Hawai'i Hilo at 11 a.m.
