ROSEVILLE, Calif. – The Chaminade University women's tennis team continued their Bay Area road trip Sunday against fellow Pacific West Conference member Jessup University at the Johnson Ranch Sports Club North.
The Silverswords came up just shy of getting their first win of the season but several 'Swords found success in their respective matches including
Berylin Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui), who won her first career singles match.
In doubles action, Jessup forfeited the No. 3 pairing against
Danica Palmer (Philadelphia/Upper Merion Area) and
Carine Bleasdell (Kihei, Maui, Hawai'i/Hawai'i Technology Academy) as they did not have enough players for the match.
The Warriors won the No. 1 doubles match to force a winner-takes-the-point in the No. 2 draw. That's where Lau and
Isabella Minaudo (Honolulu/Hawai'i Technology Academy) downed Rylie Maloney and Maria Antonella Cardenas by a 6-4 count, giving CUH its first doubles win of the season.
In singles, Palmer won her match via forfeit before Jessup took the No. 5 spot while
Hannah Lewis (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) managed to win two games in the second set.
Selena Buttery (Brockway, Pa./Brockway) had a competitive match in No. 3 singles but the Warriors took the match, taking a 3-2 lead.
A 6-3, 6-3 win over Giselli Reschke in the No. 2 spot not only gave Lau her first career singles match but it tied the match at 3.
With the No. 4 spot being the deciding match, Minaudo battled and put up a fight in the second set but eventually ended up falling short in the 6-1, 6-4 loss to Danielle Akabane.
The Silverswords fell to 0-6 while the Warriors improved to 1-10.
Chaminade will be at PacWest affiliate member Stanislaus State on Monday.
