KAILUA, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's tennis team celebrated their seniors on Friday in their match against nationally ranked Hawai'i Pacific University at the Kailua Racquet Club.
It was the final match on O'ahu for five seniors;
Carine Bleasdell (Kihei, Maui, Hawai'i/Hawai'i Technology Academy),
Selena Buttery (Brockway, Pa./Brockway),
Kirra Carvalho (Lihue, Kaua'i, Hawai'i/Kaua'i),
Berylin Lau (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui) and
Danica Palmer (Philadelphia/Upper Merion Area).
Although it was technically a road match, HPU allowed the Silverswords to commence with senior celebrations on their home court.
The Sharks (12-3), ranked No. 22 nationally in the ITA Division II rankings, captured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 (Carvalho and Lewis) and 3 (Buttery and Palmer. The 'Swords' top duo of Lau and
Isabella Minaudo (Honolulu/Hawai'i Technology Academy) battled HPU's Annika Hakovirta and Evi Roobol, ranked as the ITA's No. 14 doubles squad nationally, to a 5-2 score before the match was called when HPU clinched the doubles point.
In singles action, Lau and
Hannah Lewis (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) both dropped their respective matches at Nos. 1 and 2 by identical 6-0, 6-1 scores.
Playing her first singles match since Feb. 16, Carvalho dropped her No. 3 single match as did Buttery, a two-sport student-athlete who also wrapped up her basketball career last month, at No. 5 and Bleasdell at No. 6.
The Silverswords (0-9) will end the season on Saturday with a pair of matches at the University of Hawai'i Hilo at the Vulcans Tennis Courts. The first match begins at 10 a.m. with the final match at 2 p.m.
