HONOLULU – The Chaminade University softball team finished their first four-game Pacific West Conference series Saturday with their second doubleheader against Jessup University.
Some 24 hours after splitting Friday's twin bill, which included the first late-inning walk off home run in program history, the Silverswords lost both games, 12-2 in five innings and 2-0 at Silversword Field at Sand Island Park.
The 'Swords fell to 4-13 overall and 3-5 in the PacWest. The Warriors wrapped up their trip to the 808 with an overall mark of 11-12 and 8-6 in the conference.
Game 1: JSP 12, CUH 2 (5 inn.)
Jessup plated three runs in each of the first three innings and scored in all five frames en-route to a run-rule win.
Chaminade got its runs on a
Gabriella Schneider (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Alta Loma) RBI double in the fourth and on
Sunni Kahanu's (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/University of Hawai'i/Mililani HS) run-producing force out.
Bailey Benson (Cheney, Wash./Gonzaga Preparatory) took the loss for the 'Swords while CUH was held to five hits.
Game 2: JSP 2, CUH 0
The series finale was a pitcher's duel between
Ava Walker (Las Vegas/Faith Lutheran) and Noehemi Livingston.
After three scoreless innings, the Warriors broke through for a single run in the fourth then another in the fifth.
However, the 'Swords did not have two runners on board in any inning with Kahanu the only one getting to second base.
Meanwhile Walker kept CUH in the game with one of the finest performances in her short career, scattering six hits and just one walk. She also struck out a career-high six, which is the most by a Silversword since Madelyn Stockslager's nine Ks in May 2021. Of her 122 pitches in the game, 78 were for strikes, just a day after firing 125 pitches with 76 in the strike zone.
Summer Buck (Honolulu/Kaiser), the reigning PacWest Player of the Week, had hits in both games, resulting in a 4-for-7 series to maintain her standing as the conference's batting average leader at .500.
Mimi Smith (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) got two base knocks, the first multi-hit game of the year.
Mikala Jacobsen (Buena Park, Calif./Cypress College/Cypress HS) had Chaminade's other hit.
The Silverswords are back in action Wednesday in the opener of a four-game series against Dominican University of California at Silversword Field with first pitch at noon.
