NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Chaminade University men's golf team opened the Pacific West Conference Championships on Monday in eighth place with a first round score of 304 at the par-72, 6,818-yard Aliante Golf Course.
The Silverswords are just three shots behind seventh-place Menlo College with just seven shots separating them from second place.
Riley Born (Las Vegas/Odyssey) fired an even-par 72 in the first round, putting him in a five-way tie for fifth. The freshman struggled out of the gate with a quadruple-bogey on the par-3 4th which helped put him at 6-over through 6 holes.
But Born eagled the par-5 8th to get him back on track, the only eagle recorded in the opening round. His minus-5 in the final 11 holes got him back to even at the end of the round.
Chance Wilson (Princeville, Kaua'i, Hawai'i/Enlightium Academy) and 10 others are tied for 14th overall at 3-over 75.
Cody Dao (Henderson, Nev./Liberty) is two shots behind Wilson at 5-over 77 followed by
A.J. Dahlk (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) with an 8-over 80.
Tanner Capik (Los Angeles/Beverly Hills) is at 10-over after the first 18 holes.
Dylan Bercan of the University of Hawa'i Hilo is the individual first-round leader at 4-under 68 with a two-shot lead over Vanguard's Kyle Koski and UH Hilo teammate Jacob Torres.
The Vulcans are the team leader at 1-under 281, the only squad to shoot under par for the round, and lead second-place Vanguard by 10 shots.
The second round is Tuesday. Capik will be the first Chaminade member to tee off at 6:50 a.m. Hawai'i time while Born is the last to get underway 40 minutes later.
