HILO, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team on Friday suffered their first defeat of the season in a 21-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-20 outcome to the nationally-ranked University of Alaska Fairbanks in the Hawai'i-Alaska Challenge at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
Lillie Hinton (Spicewood, Texas/Lake Travis) led the Silverswords (1-1) with 14 kills followed by
Tabby Allen (Leander, Texas/Rouse) and
Reina Krueger (Fort Collins, Colo./Liberty Commons) with seven each. Allen also had a team-high four blocks.
Lilinoe Paschoal (Paukukalo, Maui, Hawai'i/Baldwin) had 26 assists and 12 digs, her second career double-double, her first coming against the Nanooks in last year's Challenge. The sophomore also had two of the team's four service aces.
Siria Guerini (Martinengo, Italy/Universita Telematica Pegaso/Liceo don Lorenzo Milani HS) and
Kyra Pagud (Honolulu/Moanalua) added 10 digs each.
Haylee Lyon led Alaska, ranked No. 16 in the AVCA Division II Coaches Poll, with 16 kills.
Chaminade dropped its third straight to the Nanooks dating back to last season, their longest streak since losing the first eight in the series. Prior to their current slide, the 'Swords had won 19 of the 22 previous matchups.
The Silverswords were held to a .038 attack percentage including 23 hitting errors for a minus-.108 percentage in the final two sets. They also surrendered 12 total team blocks in the match.
CUH had success in the opening set, hitting .353 with just two attack errors. Hinton put down five kills in the set while Allen, Guerini and Krueger had three each.
After tying the match with their Set 2 win, the Nanooks used their block with eight total in the final two sets.
Chaminade managed 42 kills, 60 digs and five total team blocks while Alaska put down 46 kills with 63 digs. Both teams had 39 assists.
The Silverswords will wait for the outcome of this afternoon's Hawai'i Pacific-Alaska Anchorage match to determine if they will play on Saturday at 10 a.m.
