HILO, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team on Saturday wrapped up their first weekend of competition with a 25-22, 25-13, 25-22 loss to the University of Alaska Anchorage on the final day of the Hawai'i-Alaska Challenge at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
For the second straight match, the Silverswords were plagued by attack errors, 26 total, for a hitting percentage of .121 while surrendering 11 total team blocks to the Seawolves. Alaska Anchorage had just eight hitting errors in the match.
The Silverswords, who swept Anchorage in their season opener on Thursday, fell to 1-2 to start the season but were paced by
Lillie Hinton's (Spicewood, Texas/Lake Travis) match-high 15 kills. Hinton was named to the all-tournament team after totaling 43 kills and a .278 hitting percentage in all 10 sets.
Reina Krueger (Fort Collins, Colo./Liberty Commons) added seven kills followed by
Tabby Allen's (Leander, Texas/Rouse) six.
Lilinoe Paschoal (Paukukalo, Maui, Hawai'i/Baldwin) had 29 assists for the 'Swords while
Kyra Pagud (Honolulu/Moanalua) logged her third straight double-digit dig effort with 10.
Lee Ivakina led Alaska Anchorage (2-2) with 14 kills.
Although the 'Swords trailed the majority of the opening set, they managed to forge an 18-all deadlock on a kill from
Siria Guerini (Martinengo, Italy/Universita Telematica Pegaso/Liceo don Lorenzo Milani HS). But UAA scored four of the set's final six points to take a 1-0 lead.
The Seawolves used a 7-1 run midway through the second set to assume a two-set lead.
CUH led for most of the third set but never held more than a two-point edge. Tied at 16, the 'Swords committed consecutive hitting errors, giving UAA the lead it would not relinquish.
Statistically speaking, the match was nearly even in kills (CUH 39, UAA 38), assists (CUH 36-to-33) and digs (UAA 37-to-34). However, the Seawolves had more service aces (7-to-4) while the 'Swords did not record a block.
The Silverswords are back on the road next weekend at the Central Washington Invitational in Ellensburg, Washington, when they face Simon Fraser (Thursday), Western Washington (Friday) and host Central Washington (Saturday).
