WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's soccer team faced off in the first of two non-conference tilts against in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University on Tuesday.
The Silverswords got their first score of the year but it wasn't enough in their 3-1 defeat at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Down by three scores late, the 'Swords (0-2) got their goal in the 88th minute when
Joshua Cox (San Diego/Iona University/Canyon Crest HS) headed in
Santiago Fernandez's (Orlando, Fla./Westminster College (PA)/Freedom HS) corner kick.
The Sharks had the lone goal of the first half coming in the 18th minute then tacked on two more in the 50th and 85th minutes.
CUH had seven total shots with
Vlad Tomutiu (Belmont, Calif./Cañada College/Carlmont HS) kicking a team-high three, two of which were on target.
Nisho Simon (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Westminster College (PA)/Mililani HS) fired off two more while
Chance Therrien (Charlotte, Vt./University of St. Thomas/Champlain Valley Union HS) had another.
Jonah Valmonte (Poolseville, Md./Robert Morris University/Poolesville HS) made five saves for the 'Swords.
HPU (1-1) took 18 shots with goalkeepers Eduardo Marin and Oliver Holt splitting time in front of the net.
The Silverswords and Sharks will have another non-conference meeting on Sept. 19 back at Waipio Stadium. The Pacific West Conference matchup will be on Halloween Day, Saturday, Oct. 31 at home which is also Senior Day.
The Silverswords are back on their home pitch on Sunday when they host the University of Texas at Dallas at Saint Louis Field. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
