WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's soccer team had the first of their two non-conference meetings against fellow in-state foes on Wednesday, facing in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
 
The Silverswords rallied from a score down with a goal in the waning minutes of the first half to salvage a 2-2 tie against the Sharks.
 
All four goals came in the first half with defenses ruling the final 45 minutes.
 
Olivia Leonard (Taylorsville, Utah/Utah Tech University/Skyline HS) and Milan Cordone (Las Vegas/University of Northern Iowa/Coronado HS) both found the back of the net in the 'Swords first multi-goal game since a 2-1 win over Menlo College on Oct. 10, 2024.
 
The draw with the Sharks represented the fourth tie of the series in the last six meetings. It is also the highest scoring game since the teams combined for five goals on Oct. 12, 2019.
 
Chaminade is 0-5-1 on the season while HPU is 0-6-1.
 
It didn't take the Silverswords long to open the scoring. Just 30 seconds in, Leonard took a short touch-pass from Emmerson Peller (Broomfield, Colo./University of North Dakota/Broomfield HS) then boomed a left-footed 30-yard shot that found the upper-right shelf, Leonard's first career goal and Peller's first career assist.
 
The goal was the fastest in school history, beating the previous mark by 22 seconds previously held by Nicole Nishiki in 2017.
 
With a bit of rain falling, HPU countered with the next two goals in the 24th and 33rd minutes.
 
Then in the 41st minute, the Sharks were called for a foul in their own box, resulting in a CUH penalty kick opportunity. Cordone took advantage of Silverswords' first PK try since November 2023, connecting for the equalizer, her second goal of the season.
 
Unlike the goal-fest in the first 45 minutes, the next 45 was about defense. There were just nine combined shots in the second half, five for the 'Swords. They also applied more offensive pressure with all six of their offsides in the second half.
 
Chaminade totaled 14 shots, five on-goal with Cordone getting seven shots off. Hawai'i Pacific took 12, six on target. The 'Swords also had eight corner kicks to the Sharks' seven.
 
Sydney Bakritzes (Edina, Minn./University of North Dakota/Edina HS) made four saves for the 'Swords while her counterpart Natalie Navarro made three.
 
The Silverswords close out non-conference action Sunday when they face their other in-state rival, University of Hawai'i Hilo, on Sunday at the Saint Louis Field pitch at noon.
