HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's soccer team concluded non-conference action Sunday against in-state rival University of Hawai'i Hilo.
 
Playing on the Saint Louis Field pitch for the first time in 22 days, the Silverswords suffered a tough 1-0 defeat to the Vulcans in the 44th all-time meeting between the two programs. It is the ninth time in series history that a Chaminade-UH Hilo match ended with just one goal.
 
The Silverswords (0-6-1) and Vulcans (3-2-1) will meet in their Pacific West Conference matchup in Hilo on Oct. 10.
 
The only score came in the 55th minute when Aubree Panui's moonshot from 35 yards out snuck just under the crossbar. The Silverswords came within inches of the equalizer but Courtney Hames' (Huntington Beach, Calif.) boot, also from 35 yards out, glanced off the bar in the 79th minute.
 
Despite plenty of defense, there were shots aplenty with Chaminade taking 12 and UH Hilo with 16. Milan Cordone (Las Vegas/University of Northern Iowa/Coronado HS) took four shots and accounted for all of the 'Swords' shots on-goal. Kenna Kiefer (Vail, Ariz./Cienega) attempted three shots and Marianna Carpenter (Castle Rock, Colo./University of North Dakota/Castle View HS) two.
 
Sydney Bakritzes (Edina, Minn./University of North Dakota/Edina HS) made five saves for Chaminade while her Hilo counterpart Lydia Keller made three stops.
 
The Silverswords will open PacWest action with their four-game swing through Southern California on Thursday at two-time defending conference champion and preseason favorite Point Loma.
