WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's soccer team wrapped up non-conference action Saturday with their second such meeting this season against in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Sharks, who defeated the Silverswords in the first non-conference game on Sept. 1 also at Waipio Stadium, scored two first half goals to secure the 2-0 victory.
A season-high 26 'Swords saw field time in the contest, including three seeing their first action of the season, in the team's final tuneup before Pacific West Conference action begins next week. All saw at least 17 minutes of field time.
HPU opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal in the fifth minute then added its second with just two minutes remaining in the first half. However, the 'Swords' defense played admirably, not allowing a second-half goal to keep them within striking distance.
Both squads had a high percentage of shots that were potential scores. Chaminade attempted 10 shots, six on-goal, for a season-high SOG percentage of .600 in games where they took 10 or more shots.
Conversely, HPU had a percentage of .923 with its first 12 shots being on-target before finally missing its only and final kick of the game which came in the 84th minute.
Chara Iniestra (Escondido, Calif./MiraCosta College/San Pasqual HS) had a team-high two shots for CUH, which attempted 10 in all. Both the junior's shots were on-goal.
Taking one shot that was headed between the pipes were
Joshua Cox (San Diego/Iona University/Canyon Crest HS),
Vlad Tomutiu (Belmont, Calif./Cañada College/Carlmont HS),
Jack Williams (Issaquah, Wash./Issaquah) and
Jedidiah Griffin (Honolulu/Cal State Fullerton/Punahou School), the latter being one of the three Chaminade players making their 2026 debut after playing 13 games last season.
Both teams used two goalkeepers in the game.
James Boudiette (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) started in-goal for the 'Swords, playing the first 45 minutes while
Jonah Valmonte (Poolesville, Md./Robert Morris University/Poolesville HS) saw the final 45. Both keepers had five saves.
Likewise, Oliver Holt played the first half to earn the win while Cameron Anderson guarded the net the entire second half. Both logged three saves each.
Chaminade ended its non-conference slate at 0-6 on the season while HPU is 2-3-2. The two teams will have their third contest, which is the conference meeting, on Oct. 31 at Saint Louis Field, which is also the 'Swords' senior day.
The Silverswords open PacWest action Thursday at conference preseason favorite Point Loma at the Sea Lions' Soccer/Track Complex.
