HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team closed out a successful first home stand of the season Saturday with a 26-24, 25-23, 20-25, 25-22 win over Western Oregon University in the finale of the Hawai'i Challenge at McCabe Gymnasium.
 
Outside hitter Lillie Hinton (Spicewood, Texas/Lake Travis) stamped an exclamation mark on the weekend by slamming down a career-high-tying 19 kills to earn tournament Most Outstanding Player honors as selected by the head coaches of the field. She also had 12 digs for her season's first double-double. Her 68 total kills and 4.25 kills per set average led the tournament field.
 
Lilinoe Paschoal (Paukukalo, Maui, Hawai'i/Baldwin) had 41 assists, 10 digs and two kills to earn the tournament's Most Outstanding Setter honors. The sophomore averaged 9.50 assists and had eight service aces during the Challenge while also tallying 41 digs, eight kills and three blocks.
 
The Silverswords were the only team in the field with a perfect 4-0 mark while also improving to 6-4 to conclude non-conference action including a 5-4 mark against Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponents.
 
Malena Mihalik (Santa Fe, Argentina/San Eugenio) had 10 kills and 11 digs in the win while Reina Krueger (Fort Collins, Colo./Liberty Commons) put down nine attacks with a pair of blocks. Kyra Pagud (Honolulu/Moanalua) contributed with 14 digs and five aces.
 
Vivian Yount led the Wolves (4-4) with 12 kills.
The 'Swords were in early trouble in the opening set, falling behind by as many as seven points in the early stages. They managed to catch the Wolves at 14 then took their first lead of the frame at 16-15 on an Allison Panter (Denver, Colo./Portland State University/Denver School of Science and Technology HS) kill. Pagud delivered three consecutive aces to help CUH take the opener.
 
WOU fought back in the second set, taking a 23-20 edge. However, Hinton put down three kills in their set-ending 5-0 run to give Chaminade a two-set lead.
 
Western Oregon led the majority of the third set to send the match into extra frames and, despite being on the ropes late in the fourth, staved off three match points before Tabby Allen (Leander, Texas/Rouse) put down her seventh kill of the match at aloha ball.
 
Chaminade hit .204 in the match while Western Oregon was at a .177 clip. The 'Swords managed 54 kills with 53 assists, 10 aces, 66 digs and three total team blocks. The Wolves had 46 kills with 41 assists, 61 digs, 10 aces and 12 blocks.
 
The Silverswords open Pacific West Conference action on Thursday at in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University, the first of six matches away from McCabe Gym to start the conference slate. First serve at the Shark Tank is 6 p.m.
