Harzali Hashim is in his fourth year as an assistant coach for the Chaminade University men’s soccer team. Hashim was an assistant under Jayson Abe at Mid-Pacific Institute since 2006 and arrived to Chaminade after Abe accepted the Silverswords’ head coaching position in January 2016.
During his tenure, the program has seen 14 wins, the best three-year stretch in program history.
The 2018 team posted its first-ever winning season by going 6-5-2. A 5-4-2 mark in the Pacific West Conference resulted in a sixth-place finish, the program's highest and the first time ever the 'Swords finished in the upper-half of the conference standings. A record-four Silverswords were named to the All-PacWest Teams.
The 2017 squad posted three victories which, at the time, was the best back-to-back seasons ever put together by the program.
In the 2016 season, he helped guide the 'Swords to a 5-9-1 mark, 5-7-1 in the Pacific West Conference, the most conference wins in program history. The Silverswords set a single-season record with 15 assists while also finishing with 15 goals (fourth-most) and 45 points (tied for third). He also helped goalkeeper Bernd Buescherhoff set program record for wins (5) and shutouts (4) while tying the program record with a 1.59 goals against average.
With the Owls, Hashim helped guide the Mid-Pacific boys varsity team to four Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II championships (2008, ’10, ’14, ’15) and a runner-up finish in 2013. He also helped the Owls to back-to-back Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II championships in 2014 and ’15 as well as an ILH overall title in 2010.
Under his tutelage, Mid-Pacific had the ILH Player of the Year three times, six players named to the all-state team and helped get three players to NCAA Division I programs. Prior to his assignment with the varsity team, he was the head coach of the program’s junior varsity program.
Hashim is a native of Canberra, Australia and graduated from the University of South Australia in Adelaide with a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1999. He also competed on the university’s men’s soccer team for four years and was the team’s captain his senior year. He then played for the university’s club team and was captain for three years from 1997-99.
After moving to Hawai‘i, Hashim became active in the local soccer scene, playing in the Major Island Soccer Organization (MISO) Division I level for the DAWGS F.C. from 2000-15 and was also the team’s player-manager from 2002. He also played in the MISO Over 35 group with Lanikai Tuesday and currently plays for the Honolulu United.
Hashim lives in Honolulu and is certified by the NFHS for heat illness and concussion management.
