The 2019 season is the fourth for Jayson Abe as head coach for the Chaminade University men’s soccer team, the seventh head coach in program history, and has transformed the program into a competitive one.
Abe is the winningest coach in program history, compiling 23 wins during his tenure as the Silverswords' head coach and achieved it in just his second year. The program had 16 victories in its first 10 years of existence before his arrival in 2016.
In 2019, the 'Swords finished 9-6 overall and 7-4 in the Pacific West Conference with a fourth-place finish in the conference, their highest ever, while enjoying consecutive winning seasons for the first time in team history. They also set school records in both overall and conference wins. Three of their victories were in come-from-behind fashion while two more came with game-winning goals in second half with the score tied. The Silverswords also set program records in points (64), points per game (4.57), goals (25) and goals per game (1.79) while goalkeeper Michael Stafford finished his two-year playing career as the team's career leader in wins (14) and goals against average (1.59). Two 'Swords, midfielder Noah Mokulehua and defender Curtis Coburn, garnered All-PacWest honors.
The 2018 team posted its first-ever winning season, finishing 6-5-2 overall and 5-4-2 in the PacWest. Their sixth-place finish in the conference, at the time, was the highest ever and represented the first time in history with an upper-half finish in the PacWest standings. A record-four 'Swords earned all-conference honors including Stafford whose 1.339 goals against average.
In 2017, the Silverswords won three matches although five of the team's 10 losses were by one goal while three more were by two.
In his first year, Abe guided the 'Swords to one of the finest seasons in program history with a 5-9-1 overall mark. The team also ended the season with a 5-7-1 PacWest record, their most-ever league wins in team history. Under his leadership, the 'Swords showed vast improvement on both sides of the ball. On the attack, they set a team-record with 15 assists while finishing with 15 goals (fourth-highest) and 45 points (tied for third). Meanwhile goalkeeper Bernd Buescherhoff set single-season records for wins (5), shutouts (4) while tying his own record in goals against average (1.59).
That season was also highlighted by three straight wins in October including victories over PacWest contenders California Baptist and Concordia University Irvine. Those wins helped vault them into second place with a 5-2 conference mark, the highest the 'Swords have been in the PacWest standings that late into the season. The season also saw Coburn and Buescherhoff earned All-PacWest honors, the first time since 2013 multiple 'Swords were named All-PacWest.
Abe also makes sure his teams get the job done in the classroom with 22 'Swords earning Academic All-PacWest honors since being named head coach.
