The 2014 season for Zach Kingsley is his first as head coach for the Chaminade University men’s soccer team, having been hired on January 2.
Kingsley orchestrated the greatest turnaround in program history in his first year, turning an 0-15-1 squad in 2013 to a team that went 6-10 in '14. The 5.5 game turnaround was the sixth-best in the nation that season with the six overall victories and five Pacific West Conference wins also both single-season program records. The improvement was marked by a steadier attack and defense. The 'Swords found the back of the net 18 times, the second-most goals in team history and the most since 2009. The 29 goals allowed was a new program record. By contrast, the year prior to Kingley's arrival saw the 'Swords score only 10 goals while surrendering 67.
Kingsley also made history by becoming the Silverswords' all-time winningest coach in his rookie season.
Kingsley spent the 2013 season as a graduate assistant coach for the Hawai‘i Pacific women’s soccer team under head coach Gina Brewer, where he helped with recruiting and various administrative duties.
Prior to his time at HPU, Kingsley coached three teams in his native Washington state for the Washington Rush in Seattle, including the GU14, GU11 and BU17 teams in 2012-13.
From 2010-12, he coached three teams on the Albion Soccer Club in San Diego, including the BU13-18 and GU13-18. At Albion and Washington Rush, he learned administrative aspects of running teams including helping to put together camps and clinics.
Kingsley played professionally with the Colorado Rapids of the MLS from 2002-07 and was the franchise’s nominee as the MLS Rookie of the Year during the 2002-03 season, playing in 12 games with five starts, logging 477 minutes of action. During his time with the Rapids, he also was the head coach of the Colorado Fusion U-16 boys’ team where he helped organize training sessions for the Fusion as well as running clinics and camps between the Rapids and Fusion. He was a 2002 second round draft pick by the Seattle Sounders before being traded to the Rapids in the middle of his rookie season.
Outside of his soccer experience, Kingsley also was a PE teacher and Athletics Director at French American School of Puget Sound (Wash.) from 2012-13 and also taught English at Beawha Women’s University in Seoul, South Korea from 2008-10.
The Spokane, Washington, native played collegiately at the University of Washington from 1998-2002, helping guide the Huskies to three consecutive Pac-10 titles (1998-2000), earning offensive MVP honors during his season year. He graduated from Washington in 2002 with his bachelor’s degree in Anthropology: Linguistics and Culture and is currently pursing his Master’s.
“He has gotten some great coaching mentorship along the way and having played professional major league soccer will bring a whole new level of experience and pride to the young men on our soccer team,” Chaminade Director of Athletics Bill Villa said.
Kingsley is the fifth head coach in program history.
