Joanna Patterson joined the Chaminade University women's volleyball team as a volunteer coach during the summer of 2022.

The 2023 Silverswords put together one of the top seasons in program history, winning a record 30 matches and ultimately, earning the top seed at the NCAA Division II West Regional for the first time ever. One of the top teams in the nation, the 'Swords were nationally ranked for most of the season, peaking as high at No. 12 in mid-September, their highest ever in Division II, before finishing the season 13th.

In her first year with the team, the 2022 'Swords won the second of their back-to-back Pacific West Conference championships, ultimately making a historic run in the West Regional in Bellingham, Washington. The eighth-seeded Silverswords upset No. 1-seeded Alaska Anchorage in the opening round and advanced to their first-ever West Region title match.

The former Joanna Christenson played one season at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah, leading the Thunderbirds in both assists (969) and service aces (25) as a freshman while also totaling 234 digs, 51 blocks and 30 kills. Her 59 assists in 2013 against Northern Arizona is the second-most for a five-set match in school history. However, ACL injuries in both knees the next two years prematurely ended her playing career.

Upon returning home to finish school, she coached for five seasons at Iolani School in Honolulu while earning her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Hawai'i Manoa.

Patterson prepped at Kamehameha-Kapalama, helping the Warriors to a runner-up finish in the 2012 Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division I Championships.

She currently coaches for the Ku'ikahi Volleyball Club and is completing her Master's at CUH in Counseling Psychology and an emphasis in School Counseling with Community Pathways.

Her brother, Micah, has been a member of the United States Olympic Team since 2013, helping Team USA take the bronze medal in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

She is married to Don'Yeh Patterson.
