Box Score HONOLULU, HI- The Swords got all they could handle from the Nanooks of Alaska Fairbanks, but pulled out a thriller tonight; winning their season opener in five sets (15-25, 25-18, 25-11, 16-25, and 15-12).
Junior
Whitney Viveiros (Hilo, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) led with 12 kills and 15 digs in the win. Sophomore
Crystal Powell (Honolulu, HI/Word of Life) added some pop with 11 kills, 7 digs and 2 blocks. The Swords defense set the tone winning the dig battle 54-47.
The second set was key, as momentum switched in the Swords favor as CUH took the second and third sets to take control of the match. The Nanooks refused to go away, winning the fourth set, 25-16.
Chaminade won the final set 15-12 to earn the victory.
Swords senior defensive specialist,
Kristy Inamasu (Kahului, HI/Maui) added 10 digs.
Coach Brown commented, “We didn't expect Fairbanks to go up the middle as much as they did. We were able to counter it with our defensive saves and that made the difference.”
The Swords move to 1-0 and are back in action tomorrow night in McCabe Gym. CUH faces Alaska Anchorage at 7:30 PM HT. Alaska Fairbanks falls to 0-2.
