Box Score SAN RAFAEL, CA – The Swords, in their second of four road games in a row, got a key win, taking down the Penguins of Dominican 78-70 this evening on the Dominican University campus.
Chaminade won the game comfortably, leading by double figures at the half at 34-23, and did the same for most of the second half in the PacWest conference win. A
Bennie Murray (Fairfield, CA/Will C. Wood) three with 7:56 left in the game gave the Swords an eighteen point lead at 62-44 and CUH withstood some late Dominican charges to grab the victory.
Junior guard
Bennie Murray was impressive in a return to the Bay Area, scoring 21 points, including shooting 5-6 from three-point range. Freshman
Lee Bailey (Detroit, MI/Detroit Country Day) had 16 points, while senior forward
Rickey Clayborn (Chicago, IL/E. Chicago) shot a perfect 5-5 from the floor en route to 12 points along with 7 rebounds in the win. Fellow frontcourt mate,
Matt Cousins (Santa Rosa, CA/Cardinal Newman) added 11 points and 7 rebounds before fouling out late in the second half.
Junior
Dominique Cooks (Wollongong, AUS/Holy Spirit) added 9 points on only three shot attempts for CUH.
Coach Bovaird commented following the contest: “We turned the ball over too much, but we played well defensively. Our post defense was very good. We rebounded well and shot it from three (9-15) as well as we have all year. ”
The Swords won the rebounding battle 36-31. Chaminade was stellar defensively, limiting the Dominican offense. CUH shot 60% while the Penguins shot 42% from the floor on the game.
DUC was led by Jacob Noisat with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Chaminade next faces NDNU in Belmont, CA on January 21
st. Tip is set for 7:30 PM PT.
With the win, the Swords move to 7-5, 5-0 in PWC while Dominican moves to 3-14, 2-4 PWC.
