Box Score HO'OLEHUA, HI– Chaminade and the University of Hawaii made history on the Island of Molokai as CUH fell to UH-Manoa 104-93 in front of an energetic crown at “The Barn” at Molokai High School.
The contest was fast-paced early as nineteen points were scored in the first 3:30 of action as UH led 12-7 early on. A three-point play on a driving lay-up by senior
Bennie Murray (Fairfield, CA/ Will C. Wood) cut the UH lead to 14-10 with 15:34 left in the half. The game heated up over the next two minutes as three technicals were called. Two technicals on UH and one on Chaminade as it became clear the contest was going to be highly competitive.
The first half was full of offense, as 88 points were scored just over thirteen minutes into the contest. Hawaii shot a scorching-hot 64% in the opening half and led 63-49 at the half. The Silverswords stay close via eleven made three's and shot 44% from the floor. Seniors
Bennie Murray and De'Andre Haskins (Long Beach, CA/Jordan) led Chaminade in the first half with 11 points each. Both Hauns Brereton and Isaac Fotu had 12 points apiece at halftime to lead UH in the opening twenty minutes. The Rainbow Warriors dominated the glass in the first half, out-rebounding CUH 26-11.
The scoring continued in the second half as Hawaii led CUH 77-64 with 11:09 left in the contest. Three possessions, three made three's for Chaminade cut the Rainbow Warriors lead to eight at 81-73 with 8:55 left in the contest. Hawaii responded and held off CUH down the stretch. UH finished the contest shooting 60% from the field.
Sophomore guard
Lee Bailey (Detroit, MI/Detroit Country Day) knocked down four three's on his way to 14 points, while senior
Waly Coulibaly (Bamako, Mali/Patterson Prep) added 11 points in defeat.
Junior forward
Rhys Murphy (Sydney, Australia/Barker) added 10 points on 3-6 shooting from three for CUH.
Chaminade shot from 46% the field and 46% from three, making 16 three-pointers. The Swords struggled on the glass, getting out-rebounded 45-24 by the Rainbow Warriors.
Hawaii was led by with Christian Standhardinger with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Chaminade senior De'Andre Haskins (Long Beach, CA/Jordan) continued his stellar senior year with 21 points in the loss.
The Swords move to 3-7 on the year and 0-2 in the PacWest. The Rainbow Warriors move to 5-3 on the year. Chaminade is off for the rest of the month, with their next game on January 5
th against Holy Names (CA) in the PacWest Conference home opener. Tip is set for 7:30 PM HT in McCabe Gym.
