CUH MBB: Chaminade Suffer Setback to Dominican 70-65

Cooks leads Swords with 15 points, 7 rebounds

Box Score HONOLULU, HI – The Swords lost a tough contest with Dominican 70-65 tonight in McCabe Gym. 
 
Chaminade got out to a five point lead early, leading 14-9 with under twelve minutes left in the opening half.  Chaminade senior forward Rickey Clayborn (Chicago, IL/E. Chicago) got off to a quick start with five points halfway through the first half.  Clayborn also added 2 blocks in the half. Chaminade trailed 36-32 at the half after DUC's Mark Lewis scored five points in the final ten seconds to give Dominican the lead.  
 
Senior Matt Cousins (Santa Rosa, CA/Cardinal Newman) scored 4 points and added 6 rebounds in the opening half.  CUH showed balanced scoring as seven Swords scored in the half. 
 
CUH shot 41% while Dominican shot 48% in the opening half. 
 
The Swords responded quickly to start the half and tied the game 36-36 just moments into the second half.  Dominican regained the lead as Chaminade continued to fight back. A Dominique Cooks (Wollongong, AUS/Holy Spirit) three cut the lead to 51-47 with 10:47 left in the contest. 
 
The game was tight down the stretch with DUC owning a 63-62 lead with 3:44 left.  Matt Cousins fouled out for Chaminade with just under four minutes left and Dominican's key big man, Jacob Noisat had fouled out moments earlier.
 
Dominican managed two run-out dunks by Jammall Clark late in the contest, but Chaminade remained in the contest, as a Casey Oldemoppen (Stuart, FL/Martin County) layup cut the lead to two at 67-65 with eighteen seconds left.   CUH couldn't score on their next possession and the Swords fell to the Penguins 70-65. 
 
Junior Dominique Cooks led the way with 15 points and 7 rebounds while senior Matt Cousins finished with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Freshman Lee Bailey (Detroit, MI/Detroit Country Day) tacked on 9 points in defeat
 
The Swords out-rebounded DUC 36-34.  Chaminade shot 38% from the floor while Dominican (CA) shot 48% for the contest. 
 
The Penguins were led by Jammall Clark with 18 points. 
 
Chaminade is back at home against Notre Dame de Namur on February 15th in McCabe Gymnasium. Tip is set for 7:30 PM HT.
 
With the loss, the Swords move to 9-10, 7-5 in PWC while Dominican moves to 8-16, 7-6 in the PWC.
