CUH MBB: Chaminade Falls to Cal Baptist, 87-63

Murray leads with 18 points

Box Score RIVERSIDE, CA – Chaminade lost to Cal Baptist on the road tonight 87-63 and head off to Grand Canyon in search of a Pac West Conference win to get back to the winning ways of earlier this season.
 
The first half was competitive midway through, as a jumper by freshman Darko Vukasovic (Belgrade, Serbia/Yuma) with 9:38 left cut the Lancers lead to 19-17.  CBU responded with 21-7 run to end the half and led 40-24 at the break.
 
The Lancers shot 50% from the floor in the opening half; Chaminade shot 36% to trail by sixteen. 
 
Cal Baptist continued the hot-shooting in the second half, shooting 58% from the field in the final twenty minutes and finished 11-24 from three.  CBU's Kevin Deeb was a marksman, connecting on 7-9 attempts from three and led CBU with 23 points.  Cal Baptist won the conference matchup, 87-63. 
 
Senior Matt Cousins (Santa Rosa, CA/Cardinal Newman) had 14 points and 8 rebounds in the loss, while junior Bennie Murray (Fairfield, CA/Will C. Wood) led Chaminade scorers with 18 points.  The Swords had eight assists and eighteen turnovers. 
 
Chaminade senior forward Rickey Clayborn (Chicago, IL/E. Chicago) did not play due to injury. 
 
Coach Bovaird spoke on the contest: “Turnovers killed us tonight.  It has been our focus, but we need to show improvement.  We need to get better and we're going to keep working until we do.”
 
The Swords were out-rebounded by Cal Baptist 38-34.  Chaminade shot 41% from the floor while CBU shot 54% for the contest. 
 
Chaminade remains on the road for PacWest action on Feb. 22nd at Grand Canyon. Tip is set for 6:30 PM MT in Phoenix, AZ.
 
With the loss, the Swords move to 9-12, 7-7 in PWC while NDNU moves to 16-6, 10-5 in the PWC.
