CUH MBB: Swords Defeated by Cal Baptist Lancers, 72-63

Cousins leads with a double-double, 14 points and 12 rebounds in defeat

Box Score HONOLULU, HI – Chaminade was back in McCabe Gym to take on another PacWest team near the top of the conference standings, Cal Baptist.
 
Chaminade got off to a slow start, trailing 11-2 early on.  The Swords rallied back, but never led in the first half, trailing 36-28 at the break.  Senior Matt Cousins (Santa Rosa, CA/Cardinal Newman) helped to keep the Swords close, scoring 12 points and adding 8 rebounds in the half.   Bennie Murray (Fairfield, CA/Will C. Wood) added 11 points in the half.   
 
Cal Baptist was 6-12 from three in the opening half.  The Lancers shot 54% for the half, Chaminade shot 33%. 
 
Chaminade, after a Bennie Murray three-point play and a Lee Bailey (Detroit, MI/Detroit Country Day) three-pointer took their first lead of the night at 45-44 with 14 minutes left.  A jumper by CBU's Alexsander Milovic finally ended the impressive 17-0 Chaminade run. Following the Lancers jumper, the Swords led 49-46. 
 
At the final media timeout, Cal Baptist had regained a slim lead over Chaminade at 59-56. After Dominique Cooks (Wollongong, AUS/Holy Spirit) made a free throw to complete a three-point play, the CBU lead was two, 59-57.
 
A Waly Coulibaly (Bamako, Mali/Patterson Prep) three with 1:02 left made the score 66-63 CBU.  The Lancers held on down the stretch, winning 72-63.    
 
Senior Matt Cousins finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds while CUH junior guard Bennie Murray, added 19 points in defeat. 
 
The Swords won the rebounding battle 35-31.  Chaminade shot 36% from the floor while Cal Baptist shot 54% for the contest. 
 
The Lancers were led by Ivan Patterson with 22 points.   
 
Chaminade is back at home against BYU-Hawaii on February 8th in McCabe Gymnasium. Tip is set for 7:30 PM HT.
 
With the loss, the Swords move to 9-8, 7-3 in PWC while Cal Baptist moves to 15-3, 9-2  in the PWC.
