CUH MBB: Swords Fall to Late BYU-Hawaii Rally, Lose 76-65

Murray leads Chaminade with 15 points, 9 rebounds

Box Score LAIE, HI – Chaminade fell to BYU-Hawaii tonight by a score of 76-65 at the Cannon Activities Center on the campus of BYU-Hawaii. 
 
Chaminade got off to a great start, leading 31-19 with 5:08 remaining in the first half after Matt Cousins (Santa Rosa, CA/Cardinal Newman) knocked down a jumper off an assist by junior guard Waly Coulibaly (Bamako, Mali/Patterson Prep).  The Silverswords held off a late first half rally by BYU-Hawaii and led 37-33 at the break.  CUH was an impressive 53% from the floor and 38% from three in the half.  Dominique Cooks (Wollongong, AUS/Holy Spirit) led the way with 9 points; while senior forward Rickey Clayborn (Chicago, IL/E. Chicago) added 8 points and 4 rebounds.  Waly Coulibaly added 7 points, knocking down two threes.
 
Pablo Coro had 8 first half points for BYU-Hawaii.     
 
The second half saw more back and forth action, as Chaminade held a small lead for nearly all of the first ten minutes of the second half.  The 'Siders took a three point advantage at 62-59 on a Jake Dastrup three with 7:17 left in the contest.  BYU-Hawaii held on down the stretch, winning 76-65. 
 
Junior guard Bennie Murray (Fairfield, CA/Will C. Wood) led Chaminade in scoring with 15 points and added 9 rebounds in the defeat.  Matt Cousins added 10 points and 7 rebounds, while Dominique Cooks added 11 points in the loss. 
 
Chaminade lost the rebounding count to the Seasiders, 37-41. Both teams struggled from the FT line, as CUH shot 61% and BYU-Hawaii shot 52% on the night. 
 
BYU-Hawaii was led by Jake Dastrup with 17 points.     
 
Coach Bovaird talked about the defeat: “Tonight was the story of our season with too many turnovers.  Our assist to turnover ratio was not good.  Our effort has been good all year, but we need to play smarter and not lose the ball.”
 
With the loss, Chaminade falls to 10-14 overall, 8-9 in the PacWest.  BYU-Hawaii improves to 16-10, 13-4 in the PacWest.  The Swords head home for senior night to take on UH-Hilo on March 3rd.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM HT in McCabe Gym.
