Box Score HONOLULU, HI– The Swords earned a hard-fought win this evening, defeating the Seasiders 75-64 in front of an energetic crowd in McCabe Gym. Entering the contest, CUH was in second place in the PacWest Tournament standings while BYU-Hawaii sat in fourth place.
The Swords got out to an 11-4 lead at the first media timeout, helped by two three's from senior guard
Waly Coulibaly (Bamako, Mali/Patterson Prep). The game tightened as CUH held a 26-20 lead with 7:45 left in the half. Following an alley-oop dunk by BYU-Hawaii's De'Andre Medlock, the 'Siders cut the lead to 30-29 with just over five minutes remaining in the half. Chaminade finished the half on an 11-2 run to lead 41-31 at halftime.
CUH shot 52% for the half while BYU-Hawaii shot 44%. The Silverswords were led by senior guards De'Andre Haskins (Long Beach, CA/Jordan) and
Bennie Murray (Fairfield, CA/ Will C. Wood) who scored eight points each in the half. Okesane Ale led the Seasiders with 11 first half points.
Following a step-back
Waly Coulibaly three, the Swords extended the lead to 51-36 with 15 minutes left in the contest. BYU-Hawaii never threatened after that as the Swords held on for a 75-64 victory.
De'Andre Haskins had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead CUH. Senior
Waly Coulibaly finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds, while senior guard
Bennie Murray led the Swords with 18 points and 7 rebounds.
BYU-Hawaii was led by with Okesane Ale with 22 points. The Swords shot 46%, while BYU-H shot 40% on the contest. Chaminade out-rebounded the 'Siders 43-34 and made 8-16 attempts from three.
The Swords move to 13-8 on the year and 10-3 in the PacWest with the win. The Seasiders fall to 10-10 and 7-5 in the PacWest on the year with the loss. Chaminade is back at home against Point Loma Nazarene in PacWest Conference action on February 13
th. Tip is set for 7:30 PM HT in McCabe Gym.
