WSB: Swords split twinbill with Martin Methodist, 8-6, 7-15 (5 inn)

Keyes homers twice, tallies 6 RBI

Box Score WAIPIO, HI - The Chaminade softball team split its final non-conference doubleheader of the season against Martin Methodist of Tennessee on Thursday, winning the first game, 8-6. The Red Hawks took the second, 15-7 in five innings.
 
In the first game, the Silverswords got it going in the first inning when Shannan Hokama (Torrance, Calif./South) opened the bottom of the first with a ground-rule double to left. Two batters later, Aja Keyes (Kaneohe, HI/Lutheran) hit an infield single to second, scoring Hokama from third to give CUH a 1-0 lead.
 
The Swords added three runs in the second on a Hokama single to center to score Elia Lizarraga (Torrance, Calif./Narbonne), and a two-run single by Rayna Strom-Okimoto (Aiea, HI/Aiea).
 
The Red Hawks answered with three runs of their own in the top of the third, but the Swords countered with three in the fourth, powered by Keyes' first home run of the year, a 2-run blast to right field, making it 7-3.
 
Martin Methodist made things interesting, plating three runs in the fifth and seventh innings, but the Swords held on in the seventh for the win.
 
Brett Aspel (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) picked up the win to even her record at 3-3, while Hokama finished 3-for-3 and two runs scored, while Keyes went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.
 
In Game 2, the theme was big innings. CUH plated seven runs in the second inning on five base hits. The big hit came on Keyes' 3-run homer to right. But MMC would out-do that, with a 13-run fourth inning, in which 17 batters came to the plate.
 
The loss dropped the Swords to 4-8 on the season, while the Red Hawks improved to 10-8.
 
Chaminade returns to Pac West action on Saturday when it hosts Dixie State in a doubleheader at Corp Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
