HONOLULU – The Chaminade women's volleyball team couldn't overcome a resilient Chico State squad, falling to the Wildcats in straight sets, 25-20, 26-24, 25-17, in the second evening of the Honolulu Invitational at McCabe Gym.
The loss ended the Silverswords two-match winning streak and evened their record to 2-2. The Wildcats picked up their first victory of the season to improve to 1-1.
Chico State's Haley Shurtz, who finished 2012 ranked in the top-10 nationally in kills, powered down 15 to lead the Wildcats. Lindsaw Quigley added nine while Ellie Larronde had eight.
The Silverswords were led by Kapiolani Rapoza, who put down 11 kills on the evening. Crystal Powell had seven kills, followed by Kim Spring with six. Kylee Pedro had five total blocks, while Brenda Walker recorded 25 digs. Valentina Bevilacaqua got her first start of the season at setter and responded with 26 assists.
The second set was indicative of how the evening went for the Swords. Despite grabbing a six-point advantage at 15-9, the Wildcats slowly chipped away at the lead, eventually drawing even at 23-all. Shurtz would record the final two kills of Set 2 as Chico State took a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, three consecutive hitting errors and a surrendered service ace keyed a Wildcats' 7-0 run to earn the match sweep.
The Swords conclude the Honolulu Invitational when they face Lewis University at McCabe Gym. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
