’Swords Stun Seasiders on Bailey’s Late 3

Bailey scored a career-high 32 points including the game-winner vs. BYUH.
Box Score LAIE, Hawai'i Lee Bailey knows this is his team. And it's never been so evident over the past few days.

The junior guard poured in a career-high 32 points and hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left, giving the Chaminade University men's basketball team a dramatic 105-102 overtime win over BYU-Hawai'i in a Pacific West Conference game Tuesday at the Cannon Activities Center.

Bailey's latest heroics is just four days removed from his game-winning bucket in the Silverswords' win over Hawai'i Pacific last Saturday.

With the score tied at 102, Bailey worked the ball past the timeline, got a screen from Tyree Harrison at the top of the key, dribbled left, then pulled up and buried a 22-footer from the left wing, sending Chaminade (9-6 overall, 6-1 PacWest) to its third win at the CAC in the past four years.

"When I came off the screen, I saw that I had (5-foot-7 guard Justin Yamzon) on me," Bailey said. "I just hesitated to gather myself and shot the ball with confidence."

Bailey, who was 10-of-25 from the floor with four 3-pointers, along eight rebounds and five assists, was one of five 'Swords in double figures. Kevin Hu had a season-high 19 points with three 3-pointers; reigning Hawai'i Tourism Authority PacWest Freshman of the Week, Kuany Kuany, had 15 points and seven rebounds; James Harper had 13 points; and Harrison continued to be a double-double machine with 10 points and 15 boards, the third in his last four games.

Scott Friel led the Seasiders (6-7, 4-3 PacWest) with 28 points while Pablo Coro had 21.

The 105 points by the Silverswords is the highest since February 2008 and the most in Head Coach Eric Bovaird's tenure.

BYUH grabbed an early lead before Chaminade rallied and went ahead, 18-16, on Bailey's trey at the 11:14 mark of the first half. The Silverswords would extend the lead to as many as eight, but the Seasiders made a late charge and found themselves down by only four (45-41) at the break, thanks to Friel's half-court heave which found nothing but net at the buzzer.

BYUH worked its way back at the start of the second half, taking the lead and eventually going up by five at 61-56 five minutes into the second half. But a 23-7 run put Chaminade ahead, 79-68, with 7:41 left. But the Seasiders countered with a 21-8 run, taking the lead at 89-88 with 1:52 left. After a pair of Kuany free throws to tilt the score in favor of the Silverswords, Coro dropped a 3-pointer with 48 ticks left on the clock, giving the 'Siders a 92-90 edge.

Bailey attempted to win it in regulation for the 'Swords, but missed a short jumper. However, Harrison was there for the put-back with 24 seconds left, sending the game into overtime, the first extra session of the year for CUH.

In overtime, both teams grabbed momentary leads with Chaminade taking a 99-96 advantage. DeAndre Medlock then hit two free throws and Friel made a layup to put BYUH in front, 100-99, with 2:30 remaining. The teams would trade scores before Bailey hit two free throws to knot the game at 102 with 44 seconds left. Kuany then grabbed a rebound off a Coro miss with 20 seconds left, setting the stage for Bailey's dramatic winner.

Chaminade hit 43.9 percent of its shots (38-of-82) in the game, but made 4-of-7 in overtime. BYU-Hawai'i shot 54.7 from the floor (35-of-64) and had 16 made 3-pointers to CUH's 12. However, the Silverswords out-rebounded the Seasiders, 48-35, and made 21-of-26 foul shots to 16-of-22 for BYUH.

The win was even more special in that earlier in the day, the Chaminade women's basketball team defeated the Seasiders, marking the first time both the Silversword men and women won road games on the same day since both were victorious at HPU on February 22, 2007.

The 'Swords embark on their first Mainland road trip of the season, a four-game swing through the Bay Area and Central California, starting Saturday at Holy Names.
