Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Saturday was mixed emotions for the Chaminade University men's basketball team. On a night that saw junior guard
Lee Bailey become only the 13
th player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau, the Silverswords failed to hold on to a 9-point late in regulation, eventually falling to Dominican University of California in overtime, 84-83, in a Pacific West Conference game in the Conlan Center.
Devin Golston hit a jumper with 11 seconds left in the extra session to give the Penguins the win. All three of Chaminade's losses to Division II foes this season have been by one point.
The setback snapped Chaminade's 7-game winning streak, dropping them to 12-7 overall and 9-2 in the PacWest. It also prevented the 'Swords from moving into a first-place tie with No. 12 California Baptist. The Penguins, meanwhile, improved to 13-7 and 7-5.
"It was a tough, hard-fought game," Silverswords head coach
Eric Bovaird said. "We were up nine with three minutes left to play. We usually are really good at closing games with the lead. We struggled containing their dribble-drive."
Bailey notched 22 points on the evening, giving him 1,018 career points, putting him in 11
th place all-time, ahead of Chris Reaves (1,017) and Chico Furtado (1,015).
Kevin Hu had 14 for the Silverswords while
Tyree Harrison and
AJ Mathew had 11 each.
James Harper had 10 points to round out CUH's double-digit scorers.
Kuany Kuany pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
Matt Hayes led the Penguins with 21 points with Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten adding 20 while Golston had 18. Dominique Tapin notched a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards before fouling out in overtime.
"It's a big milestone," Bailey said of the achievement. "Nothing I ever really even thought about. It would've been nicer to get it in win, but it's nice to see hard work pay off."
"I'm happy for Lee getting his 1,000
th point," Bovaird said. "He's been a great player for us and I'm hoping he has many more highlights in his career at Chaminade."
Mathew splashed in a 3-pointer, putting the 'Swords up, 71-62, with 3:10 left in regulation. But Hayes converted a 3-point play, then buried a trey in a span of 18 seconds to get the Penguins back in the game. Bailey's layup would put CUH back up by three, 73-70, with 1:18 left, but Conor Haysberth was fouled while on a putback on the next possession. Haysberth made the free throw to tie it up at 73. The 'Swords had an opportunity to win it in regulation, but couldn't convert on two attempts before the buzzer.
Dominican took the lead in overtime and Tapin's 3-point bucket put the Penguins up, 82-78, with 1:41 left. Bailey then hit a pair of free throws and following a DUC turnover, made a driving layup to tie it at 82 with 48 seconds left. Harrison was then fouled during a scramble for a loose ball with 32 ticks left. The senior forward hit 1-of-2 foul shots, setting up Golston's game-winning heroics. The 'Swords had a chance for the win, but failed to get a shot off before the clock expired.
Chaminade was outshot percentage-wise, 50-45, and out-rebounded, 45-35. But the Silverswords missed 15 free throws (17-of-32) while the Penguins were 17-of-25 from the charity stripe. In particular, the 'Swords made only 5-of-10 foul shots in the final five minutes of regulation and overtime while the Penguins were 6-of-8 during the same stretch.
The 'Swords return home to McCabe Gym on Monday, Feb. 3 when they host Azusa Pacific. Tip time is set for 7:30 p.m. with live streaming audio available at goswords.com.
