HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team will have to wait another year for a chance to end "The Streak."
For the 15
th consecutive match, Hawai'i Pacific University prevailed in the battle of in-city rivals, downing the Silverswords, 22-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 16-14, Friday at St. Andrew's Priory Gym. Chaminade's last win over HPU was in September 2008.
It was the second time that Chaminade and HPU played a five-set match with the Sharks (7-7 overall, 5-3 Pacific West Conference) outlasting the Silverswords at McCabe Gym two weeks ago.
For the second consecutive match, freshman
Kira Long set a career-high in kills for Chaminade (10-8, 3-5), putting down 17 in defeat while hitting .444 on the night. Sophomore
Cassie Rushlow contributed with 15 kills with junior
Reigna Johnson getting seven and four block assists.
Kasey Thompson led four Sharks in double-digit kills with 15.
Valentina Bevilacqua had 34 assists for Chaminade while
Athena Maskarich posted 16 digs.
Natashya Enos had five of the 'Swords' 11 service aces.
Set 1 established the tone of the match as HPU scored the first six points of the set and held a 10-3 lead. The 'Swords scratched their way back to within three at 11-8 before the Sharks extended the advantage to 15-8. Again, Chaminade rallied as three HPU attack errors brought them to 15-14. For a third time, the Sharks pulled ahead for a 21-17 lead. But like clock-work, the Silverswords made a run, this time making it count as two HPU errors, a
Suncica Bakic ace and a
Madalene Barrett kill tied the set at 21. Johnson and Barrett then combined on a block to give the 'Swords their first lead to which they eventually pulled away as Barrett's kill ended the set, giving Chaminade a 1-0 lead.
After being blitzed in the second set, the third saw a back-and-forth battle with the Sharks threatening to take the set, holding a 23-21 advantage. After a Silverswords' timeout, Long put down a kill, followed by a Rushlow and Johnson block, which tied the set. Rushlow hammered down an attack, then Long finished off the set with another kill, completing a 4-0 run, giving Chaminade a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set had similar overtones to the third with the outcome not being decided until the end. This time, HPU held on down the stretch for the win, although the Silverswords made things interesting by fighting off two set points.
In the fifth and decisive set, the 'Swords jumped out to a trio of four-point leads, the last coming at 10-6. But the Sharks, behind the energy of their fans, went on a 7-1 run to take the lead. Chaminade staved off two match points and tied the set at 14, but a service error and a double-block by Pomai Recca and Haley Doerfler ensured that the Silverswords would have to wait until 2015 to try and capture the elusive win over their in-town rival.
HPU led in nearly every statistical category, except service aces, including kills (62-52), hitting percentage (.262-.158), assists (58-47), total blocks (11-6) and digs (63-45).
The 'Swords open a seven-match home stand starting Monday against Dixie State. Live streaming audio will be available at GoSwords.com at 7 p.m.
