HONOLULU – For the second straight game, the Chaminade University women's soccer team had difficulty finding shots.
Still, the Silverswords still managed to keep Saturday's game against Point Loma interesting 'til the final whistle.
Despite being out-shot, 19-1, the 'Swords created enough disruption on the defensive side in their 1-0 loss to the conference-leading Sea Lions at Saint Louis Field.
The game's only score came 18 minutes in when Michaela Maes powered a shot from 35 yards out straight away. The ball glanced off the lower half of the crossbar and into the net.
Point Loma remained perfect in the Pacific West Conference at 6-0 while sporting a 7-2 overall mark. Chaminade dropped to 2-8 and 2-5 in the PacWest.
Lauren Ishii made nine saves on the day and helped keep the Sea Lions from hitting paydirt a second time as the 'Swords' defense were able to prevent open and easy looks from the visitors.
Although
Megan McClanahan accounted for the only shot of the game, offensively, Chaminade had several downfield looks, but just missed open teammates with crosses or through balls. They were also called for being offsides twice.
"The girls played well against a strong Point Loma team that will likely finish at the top of our conference," Silverswords head coach
Michelle Richardson said. "We had a few challenges but the girls were able to fix them and come together in the second half. We put together spells of possession that gained an attacking threat.
"They fought through the heat and played with heart and courage to get a good result. We look forward to continuing this new run of good play into Hilo and our next road trip."
The contest also marked the end of a grueling home stand in which the Silverswords played four games in eight days.
The 'Swords will get the next six days off, then return to action when they open a four-game road swing starting next Saturday at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo.
