’SwordsTop BYUH, Advance in PacWest Tourney

Hu had 20 points in Wednesday's PacWest Tourney win over BYUH.
Box Score SAN DIEGO – Both regular season games between the Chaminade University and BYU-Hawai'i men's basketball teams went into overtime. So it was fitting that the final meeting between the two O'ahu teams went down to the wire again. This time, there was much more at stake for the winner.

The Silverswords got 22 points and eight rebounds from All-PacWest second team member Kuany Kuany while All-PacWest first team member Lee Bailey had 21 points and a career-high-tying 11 assists as the 'Swords downed the Seasiders, 90-85, in the first round of the Pacific West Conference Tournament at Golden Gymnasium.

The 'Swords (17-12) will face the top-seeded and nationally-seventh-ranked California Baptist Friday in the semifinals. Tip-off is set for 1:15 p.m.

Kevin Hu poured in 20 points while Tyree Harrison notched his fifth double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kiran Shastri contributed with 10 points.

Pablo Coro led the Seasiders (15-12) with 24 points.

Chaminade led for most of the game and had as many as a 12-point lead late in the first half, but BYUH chipped away, going on a 10-0 run before a Kuany 3-pointer ended the run as the Silverswords held a 35-32 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the 'Swords again would grab as many as a 12-point advantage early on and led by 10 at 79-69 with 3:39 remaining. However, the Seasiders made one final push as a Luke Aston 3-ball brought BYUH to within one at 84-83 with a minute remaining.

But Chaminade made the plays down the stretch it needed, getting back-to-back layups from Bailey and Kuany to push the lead back to five. A layup by the Seasiders' Scott Friel brought the game back to a single possession at 88-85 with 16 seconds left, but Shastri knocked down two free throws to put the game away.

Both squads shot exceptionally well from the field in the second half, both shooting over 54 percent as CUH outscored BYUH, 55-53.

The rebounding numbers were close with the Seasiders holding a 39-38 edge, but the 'Swords hit 12-of-23 from beyond 3-point range while BYUH was 9-of-22. Chaminade also had 20 assists and nine turnovers to the Seasiders' 15 assists and 14 turnovers.
