Box Score LAIE, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's soccer team exercised several demons on Saturday at BYU-Hawai'i Soccer Field.
Sophomore forward
Austin Bush scored his first career Chaminade goal in the 37
th minute as the Silverswords ended a 22-game winless streak dating back to October 2012 in a 1-0 win against BYUH in a non-conference game.
The win also snapped a 15-game winless streak to the Seasiders with their only other victory against BYUH coming six years ago to the date. It was also the 'Swords' first-ever win in Laie.
Senior midfielder
Dayton Sato found Bush from 18-yards out for his first career assist.
The Silverswords (1-1) then held on in the second half as BYUH attempted six second-half shots. Chaminade goalkeeper Bernd Buescheroff made four saves on the day for his first career win. Jaden Epplette took the loss for BYUH (0-2).
"I'm very proud of the effort they boys gave today," first-year Silverswords head coach
Zach Kingsley said. "It was definitely a step forward for us. We scored our first goal of the season and got our first win. The boys defended as a team and fought for each other out there. It was a dogfight and we came out on top because of the tenacity of all the players on this team.
"By no means, though, have we achieved what we want to achieve yet. This is a small, but significant step forward. Now our sights are set against UH-Hilo on Monday and to get better at what we are trying to do on the field. We still need to get better at playing our game."
Monday's non-conference contest against the Vulcans will be at Saint Louis Field at 10 a.m.
