HILO, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team managed a split in their first road trip of the season, playing in the Hilo Naniloa Hawai'i Challenge Friday.
The Silverswords quickly dispatched Felician College (N.J.) 25-10, 25-14, 25-12 in their morning session, running their record to 6-0, their best start since 1996 when the 'Swords began that season 7-0.
However, Chaminade could not match it in its afternoon match, falling in straight sets to Cal State Los Angeles 25-14, 25-16, 25-23. The Silverswords are 6-1 on the year.
Keani Passi had 19 combined kills in the doubleheader while
Daisia LaBrie put down 15. LeBrie also had nine total blocks on the day.
Chaminade vs. FelicianThe Silverswords made quick work of the Golden Falcons (1-5) with the match taking just over 70 minutes to complete for their first 3-0 sweep of the season. Passi had a match-high 11 kills and hit a whopping .647 as Chaminade dominated on the attack 45 kills to Felician's 18. They also out-hit them .411-.012 and out-pointed them at the service line, 7-2.
The 'Swords opened up a commanding 21-5 lead in the first set to go up 1-0. In the second set, Chaminade led 13-12 but went on a 12-2 run to end the stanza as LaBrie tallied two kills and three block assists during the run to put the 'Swords up 2-0.
In Set 3, the 'Swords jumped out to a 9-5 lead then
Natashya Enos and
Kim Spring each strung together runs at the service line as Chaminade won the set handily.
Enos had 21 assists, eight more than Felician had as a team. Passi and LaBrie each had four block assists.
Brenda Walker accounted for 11 digs.
Chaminade vs. Cal State Los AngelesThe Silverswords found themselves down 0-2 for the first time this season. Then in the third set, Chaminade jumped out to a 6-1 lead with
Kasse-Ann Kiriu-Dela Cruz at the service line. The Golden Eagles rallied eventually taking a 12-11 lead but the 'Swords retook the lead at 15-14 on Spring's kill.
The set went back and forth before CSULA forged ahead to take a 24-22 lead, winning the match as Chaminade committed a hitting error at match point.
Passi led Chaminade with eight kills followed by LaBrie with seven. LaBrie also had five total blocks.
Skyler Curry had a team-high 12 assists while Walker had 10 digs.
Iona Lofrano led CSULA (7-0) with 13 kills.
The 'Swords will look to avenge their defeat to Cal State Los Angeles in their final match of the Challenge Saturday at 10 a.m.
