HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's soccer team continues to make history.
After a historic 2014 season, the Silverswords got past rain and two lightening delays to turn back Wheeling Jesuit (W. Va.) 1-0 in their season opener Thursday at Saint Louis Field.
Junior midfielder
Lauren Uehara provided all the offense the 'Swords needed, netting her first career goal at the 76-minute mark. Senior defender
Kristen Fujinaga started a break in her backfield and got a perfect through-ball to Uehara, who beat a defender and fired a perfect shot past the goalkeeper from 15 yards straight away.
The victory marked the first-ever win over a Mainland non-conference opponent as well as in a season debut. The Silverswords' 1-0 record also put them over .500 for the first time in team history.
Senior goalkeeper
Lauren Ishii picked up the win, the fifth of her career. The Cardinals' Holly Kraus (0-1) took the loss. Both keepers made three saves.
The game was played under a constant drizzle before lightening halted play twice with 25:10 remaining in the second half. The game was delayed for a total of 61 minutes.
CUH took seven shots while WJU took nine while the Cardinals had four corner kicks to the Silverswords' four.
Chaminade will look for a second straight win Monday when it faces Westminster of Utah at Saint Louis Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
