HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's soccer team looked to go 2-0 for the first time in program history but couldn't find a way to contain Rylei North.
North, who set a program-record with 16 goals for Westminster (Utah) last year, found the back of the net twice for the Griffins as the Silverswords fell 2-0 Monday at Saint Louis Field.
Following a Chaminade giveaway near midfield, North dribbled down the left sideline and powered a shot from 25 yards out, over the outstretched arms of 'Swords goalkeeper
Lauren Ishii at the 11-minute mark for the game's first goal.
Then at the 49-minute mark, a logjam in front of the Chaminade net ensued following a Westminster corner kick. The ball caromed off players from both team several times before finding North, who tapped it in from near point-blank range.
Lauren Uehara was the only 'Sword with multiple shots at the Griffins' goal, taking two shots, one on goal.
Twyla Hamasaki,
Megan McClanahan and
Nicole DeBoer each took shots for the Silverswords.
Chaminade felt to 1-1 on the year with Ishii making five saves on the day in taking the loss. Abi Yanke started the first half for Westminster to earn the win as the Griffins improved to 3-0 on the year, taking all three matches from the Pacific West Conference O'ahu schools.
The Silverswords return to action on Sept. 17 when they host Hawai'i-Hilo at 10 a.m. at Saint Louis Field in non-conference action.
