LAIE, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team was looking to end an 11-year North Shore drought. Instead the elusive win at BYU-Hawai'i will have to wait another year.
The Silverswords fell to the Seasiders 25-18, 25-18, 25-21 Wednesday at the Cannon Activities Center, dropping consecutive matches for the first time this season. Chaminade fell to 10-3 overall and 3-2 in the Pacific West Conference while BYUH evened its record to 6-6 and remained unbeaten in the PacWest at 4-0.
The loss was the 'Swords' 11
th straight to the Seasiders dating back to November 2009 and their 14
th consecutive in Laie with Chaminade's last win at the CAC coming in November 2004.
Kim Spring led the Silverswords with 10 kills followed by
Keani Passi with six and
Daisia LaBrie four. The 'Swords were held to a .098 hitting percentage, their lowest of the season.
Malary Reid led BYUH with 12 kills followed by Sinamoni Tonga's 11.
Natashya Enos led the 'Swords with 14 assists while
Brenda Walker recorded a team-high 14 digs while Passi extended her double-digit digs streak to four with 11. Spring added four service aces for the Silverswords.
Chaminade managed to out-block BYUH 6-2 with
Cassie Rushlow and LaBrie getting three block assists each while
Reigna Johnson added a pair.
The 'Swords opened up a 7-2 lead as Rushlow and LaBrie combined for four points, forcing the 'Siders to call an early timeout. But a 6-1 run gave BYUH its first lead of the set which eventually grew to 20-15 as the 'Siders took a 1-0 match advantage.
BYUH carried the momentum into the second set opening up a 9-3 lead. Passi hammered down three kills as the 'Swords drew to within two at 12-10 but a late 4-0 run by the Seasiders helped give them the second set.
The Seasiders led 12-5 in Set 3 but Rushlow got a kill, teamed with LaBrie for a block, then Chaminade got back-to-back service aces from Spring to close to 14-11, forcing the Seasiders to call timeout. However a 6-2 BYUH run would help put the set and match away as Chaminade was swept for only the second time this season.
The Silverswords embark to the Mainland for the first time this year as they open a three-match swing to the PacWest's Southwest Pod on Oct. 7 at Dixie State.
