ART U Rallies past ’Swords in Second Half

SAN FRANCISCO – The Chaminade University women's soccer team concluded their first Mainland trip of the season with a disappointing 3-2 loss Monday to Academy of Art at Beach Chalet Soccer Field.

The Silverswords couldn't hang on to a second-half lead as the Urban Knights scored twice in the final 22 minutes, including the game-winner on Abi Chavez's penalty kick with less than two minutes remaining.

Lauren Uehara had three points on a goal and assist for Chaminade which fell to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the Pacific West Conference.

ART U got its first win of the season, improving to 1-6-1 and 1-1-1.

Jordan Taboniar netted her first career goal in the 13th minute on Uehara's corner kick to open the scoring but Laura Mick tied it with her goal in the 30th minute to deadlock the contest at 1 at halftime.

Then just 38 seconds into the second half, the Urban Knights failed to clear the ball in front of the net and Uehara took advantage, punching the ball past ART U keeper Maggie Alikpala. Her first goal of the season gave the 'Swords a 2-1 advantage.

But the Urban Knights tied it at 2 when Makayla Godden's shot from nearly 25 feet out from the left angle of the box curled less than a foot beneath the crossbar and over the outstretched arms of 'Swords net-minder Brandee Lane to square the game in the 68th minute.

Then with only 1:48 left in the contest, Chaminade was whistled for a foul inside its own box, resulting in Chavez's second goal which proved to be the game-winner.

Lane made three saves in suffering the loss. Alikpala had five in picking up the win.

Caitlin Tatemichi attempted seven of Chaminade's 18 shot attempts with three on goal. Nicole Nishiki and Jana Kakugawa also had SOGs for the 'Swords. They also led in corner kicks, 4-2.

The Silverswords return home to face BYU-Hawai'i Saturday at Saint Louis Field. Chaminade has never defeated the Seasiders in 21 tries (0-20-1) in the 11th and final year of the rivalry. BYUH defeated CUH in a non-conference meeting on Sept. 13.
