Women’s Hoops Falls to No. 11 CBU

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team dropped a 111-77 decision to No. 11 California Baptist Thursday at McCabe Gym.

Lilia Maio and Destiny Castro had 21 points each for the Silverswords who fell to 1-11 and 1-7 in the Pacific West Conference. The pair combined to shoot 15-of-21 from the floor.

Cassidy Milhalko and Lexy Ram had 19 each for the first-place Lancers who improved to 13-2 and 6-0 in the PacWest.

Courtney Kaupu had 13 for the 'Swords with Kristle Henry dropping 10. Maio added nine rebounds and three assists while Henry also had three dishes. Castro added a season-high four steals in the loss.

Despite the setback, Maio reached the 1,100-point barrier and now has 1,116 points, putting the senior from Nanakuli just 26 points away from passing Samantha Saito as the program's all-time leading scorer.

The 'Swords again proved they were up for the challenge in the opening minutes. Castro scored the game's first four points then Maio's 3-pointer gave the underdogs a 7-2 advantage. CBU went ahead midway through the quarter but Castro scored seven straight points then Kaupu capped the 10-2 run with a triple to put the home team up 19-15 with just under three minutes left in the stanza. Castro had 13 first-quarter points in hitting 6 of her 7 shots but the Lancers held the lead, 28-24, at the end of the quarter.

Chaminade held its own in the beginning of the second quarter but CBU managed to build its lead to double-digits and took a 58-46 halftime advantage.

After Kaupu stuck a trey to open the third quarter, the Lancers used a 12-1 run to put the game away.

Chaminade made 29 baskets on the night, tying for the second-highest on two other occasions this season.

The Silverswords will leave O'ahu for the first time this season as they open a three-game road trip Tuesday at Academy of Art in San Francisco. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
