HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's soccer team closed out their two-match home stand with a 3-1 win over Academy of Art Tuesday at Saint Louis Field.
Caitlin Tatemichi (Honolulu/Roosevelt) continued her assault on the record books, scoring two goals to become the Silverswords' all-time leading goal-scorer with 12, breaking the previous mark of 11 held by Twyla Hamasaki (2012-15). The junior forward who was named the Pacific West Conference Player of the Week on Monday has scored six of her seven goals this season in the past two matches.
The win improved the 'Swords to 3-4 overall and evened their PacWest mark at 2-2 while the Urban Knights fell to 0-8-1 and 0-4 in the conference.
Tatemichi put Chaminade on the scoreboard first with her 25-yard boot after receiving a feed from
Jordan Taboniar (Anahola, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) in the 33
rd minute to help stake them to a 1-0 lead at the break.
After ART U knotted the score with a Silvia Fernstrom goal in the 67
th minute, the 'Swords had an immediate response.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Silverswords played the ball into Urban Knight territory where
Cailla Fabro (Waipahu, Hawai'i/Idaho State) fired a pass to
Megan McClanahan (Papillion, Neb./Papillion LaVista South) who then whipped a shot from 20 yards out past keeper Maggie Alikpala-Wilson to put the 'Swords ahead, 2-1. It was McClanahan's first career goal.
The 'Swords then iced the match nine minutes later when Tatemichi received a feed from
Bree Chang (Aloha, Ore./Aloha), dribbled down the right sideline and fired a shot from the right angle at the lower left corner of the net for her history-making goal.
Brandee Lane (Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle) made five saves to earn the win while Alikpala-Wilson made five stops in taking the loss. Both teams took 13 shots with eight being on-goal for Chaminade and seven for ART U.
While Tatemichi's career goals mark may be the defining headline of the day, several other performances will also go into the record books. Her two-goal game gave her seven this season, breaking the previous single-season mark of six set by Jamie Lindstrom in 2007. Tatemichi's 15 points this season is also not only a single-season record but her 25 career points puts her just one shy of Hamasaki's career milestone.
Meanwhile Fabro's assist gave her four this year which is not only a season-record but the Waipahu High School graduate also tied her with Hamasaki and Shannon Wright (2011-14) in career assists.
The Silverswords head to the road for four straight matches in Southern California, starting Saturday at Concordia University Irvine at 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time.
