HONOLULU – On their final home match of the season, the Chaminade University women's soccer team played the role of spoiler on the day they honored their three seniors in their final home match.
Junior
Caitlin Tatemichi (Honolulu/Roosevelt) scored twice in the second half including the game-tying goal with 14 minutes left in regulation to give the Silverswords a 2-2 draw against Fresno Pacific. It was her third multi-goal match and also snapped her seven-match scoreless streak.
The 'Swords (3-10-2 overall, 2-8-2 Pacific West Conference) denied the Sunbirds (9-6-2, 9-2-1 PacWest) a chance to take the conference lead over California Baptist. It kept FPU one point behind the Lancers with both teams having one match remaining in the regular season. The tie also snapped Fresno Pacific's seven-match winning streak.
The Sunbirds struck with a goal in the 13
th minute but Chaminade responded in the second half. Tatemichi ripped a shot that deflected off Fresno Pacific goalkeeper Summer Hammond in the 61
st minute to knot the match at 1.
FPU retook the lead two minutes later but the 'Swords got the equalizer in the 76
th minute. Tatemichi took a loose ball, dribbled the field as Hammond and another defender made a charge. Tatemichi managed to get enough of the ball, chipping it over Hammond as the ball trickled into the net to help send the match into overtime.
Neither squad was able to get the golden goal in the final 20 minutes of extra time as the 'Swords were able to survive a slew of shots down the stretch.
CUH goalie
Brandee Lane (Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Castle) made nine saves while Hammond made one. Tatemichi took four of the home team's shots while
Cierra Toledo-Muragin (Hilo, Hawai'i/Waiakea) and
Bree Chang (Aloha, Ore./Aloha) each attempted two.
Following the match, the team celebrated the four-year careers of Chang,
Megan McClanahan (Papillion, Neb./Papillion LaVista South) and
Shyann Moriguchi (Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama). The trio experienced 11 victories, the most-ever wins by a single four-year class.
Moriguchi, who has battled injury throughout her career and who was again hampered by a knee injury, was allowed to get an honorary start in her final home match. In a gesture of goodwill by Fresno Pacific, she allowed to make one last touch of the ball and was then subbed out for the final time as Toledo-Muragin replaced her just seconds into the match.
Tatemichi's two goals extended her single-season records of nine goals and 20 points. She also passed Twyla Hamasaki for most points in a career (30).
The Silverswords will wrap up the season Saturday at Hawai'i Hilo.
