OAKLAND, Calif. – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team made it two straight wins on their final road trip of the season, downing Holy Names 25-11, 25-18, 28-25, Wednesday at Tobin Gymnasium.
Emma Tecklenburg (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior), who missed her first career match Monday at Fresno Pacific due to injury, put down a match-high 17 kills while hitting .355 for the Silverswords, who improved to 13-11 overall and 8-8 in the Pacific West Conference.
Kira Long (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista) added nine kills while
Brooke Bell (Escondido, Calif./North Idaho College) added seven kills and a block for Chaminade, which defeated Holy Names for the fifth consecutive meeting.
Summer Williams led the Hawks (0-25, 0-16 PacWest) with seven kills.
Skyler Curry (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) and
Danielle Wiley (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) continued to be an effective setting duo, each dishing out 20 assists.
Claire Zanon (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) had 18 digs and two of the 'Swords' seven service aces. Wiley also had nine digs while
Nina Torio (Mililani, Hawai'i/Mililani) added eight.
Chaminade hit .306 as a team, its third-highest percentage of the season and held HNU to .047, the lowest hitting percentage by an opponent this season.
The 'Swords cruised through the first set, opening up a 12-3 lead with Tecklenburg putting down six kills with no errors. Chaminade hit .467 in the set. The sophomore hammered down six more in the second and had 12 kills at the end of two sets. In contrast, HNU had 12 as a team. Despite its struggles, Holy Names managed to stave off seven straight set points before Chaminade finally got the Set 2 winner via Long's kill.
The Hawks, however, did have momentum on their side and showed plenty of fight in the third set, leading by as many as four points (22-18). But the 'Swords got an ace from Curry, forced two hitting errors and got a
Kiana Drumheller (Auburn, Wash./Auburn Riverside) kill to take a 23-22 advantage. Holy Names rallied back and managed to earn two shots at set point, the final coming at 26-25.
But Tecklenburg got back-to-back kills then at aloha ball, forced a hitting error to win the match, sending the Hawks to their 39
th consecutive losing set.
Chaminade dominated in nearly every phase except blocks (3-1 HNU). The 'Swords led in kills (46-24), assists (43-20), aces (7-4) and digs (58-34). It was also their most digs in a three-setter this season.
The Silverswords continue the road trip Thursday when they face Academy of Art at historic Kezar Pavillion. First serve is set for 1 p.m. local time.
