HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team were aiming to match their best Pacific West Conference start in program history on Friday but were denied by Point Loma, 25-21, 20-25, 25-14, 25-11, at McCabe Gym.
The Silverswords fell to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the PacWest, one victory shy of the 1996 squad which started the conference 5-0 that year. They also saw their four-match winning streak come to an end.
Emma Tecklenburg (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior),
Brooke Bell (Escondido, Calif./North Idaho College) and
Kira Long (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista) each led the 'Swords with eight kills.
Terezie Cernosek (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) tied her season-high with seven kills with a .429 attack percentage for Chaminade while
Claire Zanon (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) contributed with five kills and
Rachel Reedy (Temple City, Calif./Arcadia) put down three in her return from an injury.
Nina Torio (Mililani, Hawai'i/Mililani) managed 15 digs on the night while Zanon had eight which snapped her consecutive double-digit digs streak at 11 matches.
Danielle Wiley (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) had 16 assists for Chaminade while
Skyler Curry (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) had 15.
The Sea Lions (6-7, 3-2 PacWest) were led by Julia Wingert's match-high 17 kills. She also had five of Point Loma's 13 service aces.
The 'Swords were held to a .143 attack percentage, their lowest since the season opener against then-third-ranked Nebraska-Kearney (.140), and had just three total team blocks to PLNU's eight.
The Silverswords will look to end their PacWest-opening six-match home stand on a right note when they face Azusa Pacific on Saturday at McCabe Gym. The Cougars, who are just outside the AVCA Top-25 Coaches Poll, are 12-1 and 5-0 in the PacWest after their three-set sweep of Hawai'i Pacific University on Friday.
The match is set for 3 p.m. with live streaming audio coverage on GoSwords.com.
