HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's volleyball split a pair of matches Saturday at the Hawai'i Challenge at McCabe Gym.
The Silverswords earned their first win of the season, rallying from a 2-1 deficit to stop Seattle Pacific in the 25-23, 16-25, 15-25, 25-15, 15-11 morning win but dropped a three-setter to nationally-ranked Lewis in the nightcap, 25-22, 25-19, 25-21.
Emma Tecklenburg (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) put down a combined 28 kills on the day while
Kira Long (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista) added 21 for Chaminade (1-2).
A pair of freshmen had standout performances with libero
Claire Zanon (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) picking up 42 digs in the two matches while setter
Danielle Wiley (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) totaled 41 assists.
Match 1 vs. Seattle Pacific
After taking the first set, the Falcons stormed back, winning the next two sets. In a must-win four set, the 'Swords ran off the stanza's first five points and led 12-3.
Brooke Bell (Escondido, Calif./North Idaho College) contributed with three points in the run with a pair of kills and a solo block while Tecklenburg and
Rachel Reedy (Temple City, Calif./Arcadia) each had two kills.
SPU jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the decisive fifth set but Chaminade's 4-0 run capped by Bell's kill gave the home team their first lead of the set. A double-block by Bell and
Alexis Hamilton (Miami/Valley Christian) set up aloha ball then Tecklenburg put down her 16
th and final kill of the match to end it.
Long had nine kills while Hamilton, Reedy and Bell had eight apiece.
Kiana Drumheller (Auburn, Wash./Auburn Riverside) added six.
Zanon had a match-high 23 digs while Tecklenburg completed a double-double match with 12.
The 'Swords also used a triple-threat setting combo with Wiley's 19 assists,
Skyler Curry (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) with 17 and
Hannah Baker (Bellville, Texas/San Jacinto JC) with 10. It's the first time since consistent records were kept in 2006 that the Silverswords had three players with double-digit assists in the same match.
Match 2 vs. No. 8 Lewis
Despite dropping all three sets, the youthful 'Swords showed no quit against the Flyers (2-0), who was one of the last four teams standing in last year's NCAA Division II National Championships.
All three sets were competitive against the eighth-ranked team in the nation. The 'Swords trailed by single points in the first (23-22), second (17-16) and third (19-18) sets before Lewis was able to pull away.
Tecklenburg and Long each had 12 kills for Chaminade against Lewis while Bell added nine. Serving as the primary setter, Wiley had 32 assists and three aces while Zanon had 19 digs with
Isabella Tessitore (San Diego/Torrey Pines) adding a career-high nine digs.
