Women’s Hoops Falls to Notre Dame de Namur

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team ended their seven-game home stand with a 77-55 loss to Notre Dame de Namur Friday at McCabe Gym.

Destiny Castro (Talofolo, Guam/Notre Dame HS) had another solid outing, hitting for a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds, falling a board shy of her second consecutive double-double. She also posted four assists, five steals and a block.

For the second straight contest, Kali Benavente (Tamuning, Guam/Academy of Our Lady of Guam) reached her career-high in the scoring column with 16 points. She also had three assists, a block and steal.

The loss dropped the Silverswords to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in the Pacific West Conference.

The Argonauts (7-7, 4-2 PacWest) were led by Aubrey Mendonca's 16 points.

Diamond Carter (Kapolei, Hawai'i/Olympic College) added eight points and four rebounds for the 'Swords while Sephora Yayouss (Brussels, Belgium) had season-high with seven points and a season-best-tying three steals along with three assists. Skye Haraga (Kailua, Hawai'i/Punahou) hit a pair of 3-pointers for a season-best six points.

Chaminade trailed by as many as 26 in the game. Unlike in several other contests this season where the 'Swords have chopped large deficits in the second half, the big run never came, although they did outscore the Argos, 19-18, in the fourth quarter.

The 'Swords shot 36.9 percent from the field and pulled down 29 rebounds but struggled from long range, making just 4-of-22 shots. Conversely, NDNU had 44.4 and had 47 boards and made 10-of-29 from triples territory. However Chaminade had a season-high five blocked shots with 10 steals.

The Silverswords will leave the island for the first time this season next week when they face Dominican University of California in San Rafael, Calif., on Saturday, Jan. 13, the start of four straight games on the Mainland.
