AZUSA, Calif. – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team was looking to take down the last Pacific West Conference unbeaten on Thursday.
Instead, Azusa Pacific continued to post a zero in the loss column after its 25-23, 25-19, 25-11 win at the Felix Event Center.
The loss dropped the Silverswords to 10-2 overall and 4-2 in the PacWest. The Cougars improved to 11-4 and 7-0.
Emma Tecklenburg (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) posted her sixth double-double of the season with a match-high 11 kills while posting 10 digs.
Alana Handy (Burlington, Wash./Bethune-Cookman Univ./Burlington-Edison) added eight kills and eight digs, followed by
Brooke Bell (Escondido, Calif./North Idaho College/Calvin Christian) with six kills each.
Claire Zanon (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) and
Rachel Reedy (Temple City, Calif./Arcadia) each had four kills for the 'Swords. Zanon also had 10 digs and a pair of blocks.
Danielle Wiley (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) and
Skyler Curry (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) combined for 31 assists. Wiley also had seven digs.
APU had six players with six or more kills, led by Amy Hinnant's 10.
Chaminade had a prime opportunity to take a one-set lead by building a 23-19 advantage. But the Cougars stormed back, ending the set on a 6-0 run.
A 9-2 APU run midway through the second set helped carry them to a 2-0 lead. Chaminade managed to jump out to a 4-1 lead in the third but the Cougars' 20-3 surge sealed the match.
The 'Swords hit just .119 in the match to the Cougars' .349 percentage. They were also out-blocked 11-2. However they managed to out-dig Azusa Pacific, 50-45, and had five service aces to APU's two.
Despite the setback, Tecklenburg moved closer to the school's top-10 kills list. With 725 career kills, she is just 14 behind
Crystal Powell (2010-13) who is 10th on the list.
The Silverswords conclude their Southern California road trip Saturday at Concordia Irvine.
