Kea'au, Hawai'i – For
Jamin Fonseca (Mililani, Hawai'i/Mililani), his first career goal came at the most opportune time.
The sophomore midfielder, who last year was forced to step in as the emergency goalkeeper during the second half in the season finale at Hawai'i Hilo, this time delivered with his leg, firing the golden goal 32 seconds into overtime to give the Silverswords the 1-0 victory over the Vulcans at Paiea Stadium on the Kamehameha-Hawai'i School campus.
Fonseca's score came on a pass from
Noah Mokulehua (Waimanalo, Hawai'i/Kaiser) who recorded an assist for the second consecutive game.
The victory came just seven days after the 'Swords defeated UH Hilo 4-2 at Saint Louis Field.
The win evened the Silverswords' record to 2-2 on the year. The match was a non-conference tilt and did not count in the Pacific West Conference standings. The Vulcans fell to 1-6.
With time winding down in the second half, neither team was able to get a good look nor a shot at the net in the final nine minutes of regulation.
But Mokulehua's pass just seconds into the extra period found Fonseca who then made a bicycle-like volley kick over UHH keeper Nick Williams for the winner.
Chaminade goalkeeper
Michael Stafford (Honolulu/Iowa Western CC/Kalani HS) earned his second straight win, making two saves while facing eight shots.
The 'Swords attempted nine shots in the game with five on-goal. The Vulcans had the corner kick advantage at 12-2.
Curtis Coburn (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach),
Jared Rivera (Union City, Calif./Ohlone College/James Logan),
Tasman Turner (Kailua, Hawai'i/Iolani) and
Davin Garma (Kalaheo, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) each played all 91 minutes of the match.
The Silverswords remain on the road for their first mainland contests of the season, starting Friday at Dominican.
