’Swords Blitzed at Point Loma

SAN DIEGO – The Chaminade University men's soccer team is still trying to figure out the license plate of the semi that ran over them on Monday.

The Silverswords suffered a 9-1 defeat to Point Loma at the PLNU Soccer and Track Field, handing head coach Jayson Abe the worst defeat during his tenure.

Chaminade fell to 6-4 on the year but remains in third place of the Pacific West Conference at 4-2. A win would have vaulted the 'Swords past the Sea Lions into second place.

Instead, almost nothing went right for the 'Swords whose nine goals surrendered matched the opponent record set by Grand Canyon on Oct. 14, 2006 while the eight-goal margin of defeat was the most since an 8-0 loss at Hawai'i Pacific on Oct. 27, 2010.

The 'Swords' only score was an own goal coming in the 61st minute. Off a free kick by Quinton Brown (El Paso, Texas/Franklin), a Point Loma defender attempted a header to clear the ball away from the net but instead ended up misdirecting the ball into their own net.

David Achaerandio and Parker Scalzo each had hat tricks for Point Loma which improved to 9-4-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the PacWest. The Sea Lions scored five goals in the first half alone then added four more in the final 45 minutes.

Michael Stafford (Honolulu/Iowa Western CC/Kalani HS) made one save while Brandon Yasue (Honolulu/Kaiser) also saw action in the net, seeing nearly 25 minutes and making two stops.

Colin Roemer (Cologne, Germany/Barton CC/Wirtschaftgymnasium Westerburg) attempted a team-high two shots for Chaminade.

The Silverswords are back in action Thursday at Biola.
